On an a relaxing Tuesday evening, MILLY designer and founder Michelle Smith, MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and Quest Magazine’s Elizabeth Meigher hosted a cocktail party to celebrate Mika’s new book, “Obsessed” celebrating women’s bodies and inspiring confidence for those struggling with body image issues.
Guests enjoyed the evening at the MILLY NYC flagship boutique on Madison Ave for a special toast by Mika, where she encouraged us to talk about our issues and not hide them from friends and family. Twenty percent of shopping proceeds for the evening benefitted Grace Outreach; a local NYC charity dedicated to providing free educational and professional training to low-income young women in the South Bronx.
Notable guests included Emma Snowdon-Jones, Jennifer Creel, Grace Outreach Board Chair Margaret Grace, Gillian Miniter, FOX’s Ainsley Earhardt and Kimberly Guilfoyle, and Julie Macklowe. Who doesn’t like to shop for a cause and this seemed like the perfect day to do so.
We actually spoke with author Mika Brzezinski to get a more personal insight on the book:
Mika who inspired you to write this book?
“One of my close friends who realized that her body image issues were much bigger than what she had actually thought…I knew right then that this was something that women still didn’t feel comfortable with addressing.”
What impact do you hope this book will have on women?
“This book will definitely help empower women and let them know that it’s ok to embrace your body no matter what your size is today or tomorrow. Also this is a book that lets women know it’s ok to have eating issues and to talk about them.”
Did you find resistance when writing this book?
“No. I knew this was something women need to know about.”
What’s your perfect summer outfit?
“A Milly Dress they are comfortable and effortless!”
After speaking with the gracious Mika Brzezinski the lovely Michelle Smith and I spoke about why she decided to get involved.
Michelle Why did you decide to get involved in helping a close friend with their book launch?
“This book is definitely something that my customer can relate to…Clothes are something that matter to women! My brand is built on strong and confident women and empowering them no matter what size they are!”
What can we expect to see in your next fall 2013 collection?
“My Fall ’13 collection is inspired by New York! Within my collection you can see this beautiful image of New York. The photograph is a skyline that I knew I had to incorporate on some of the pieces for my customer.”
