The Little Prince Encounters a Rose

In a crater, I find you dying.
The granite so thick, your petals like paper,
with a meteor shower in full bloom, the falling rocks sound
like hail pelting down. It was dark: your blades
so glorious against my hand.

You prick the blood and fear out,
slowly, your jagged, harsh thorns, your sleek, neat stem.

I know an embrace is not exactness,
but, just now, our eyes meeting,
it was all we ever needed to know about exactness.

Because you fall, inside me, when it matters,
all the way to Saturn’s rings and its rotating moons.
Staring out into black holes,
comets are out there,
but right now, I only grasp you.
